Kickboxing  Richmond, VA

Our Program Director, Gary Miles, has been teaching kick-boxing/boxercise for twenty five years in the Richmond, Va area.

He began this program at the downtown YMCA with only nine students. As the years went by, more and more people, just like you in the Richmond area, became interested in the benefits of a martial arts workout, but without the traditional uniforms, and basic forms or stances.

As a result of this, kick-boxing was combined with an aerobic style workout set to fast paced music. Today, we have approximately two-hundred members, most of which are female, participating in the kick-boxercise program here at A.K.C.

We offer "K-Box", as we call it, six days a week including both morning and evening classes. We feel this gives you the opportunity to workout with us no matter what schedule you are currently following (i.e. work, school, etc.).
The class itself consists of a variety of exercises, which incorporate many muscle groups in your body; some of which you did not know existed! The following description will give you a general idea of how the class is done.

The first phase of the class is dedicated to a solid warm-up, followed by stretching and muscle toning movements. After we are up and running, the kick-boxing begins. You will use hand weights for the second phase of the class as you practice the punches, kicks, knees, and elbows used in both Western and Muay Thai kick-boxing. Whether you choose a one, two, or three pound hand weight depends on your endurance and fitness level. After you have thoroughly worked your arms, shoulders, glutes, thighs, abs, (and much more) during this phase, you will move on to phase three.
Phase three generally consists of getting a partner and practicing your techniques on focus pads. Focus pads are approximately a square foot in size, made of foam with a vinyl covering, which provides a soft target for you to make accurate contact. You and your partner will each take turns over the course of several two or three minute rounds. Note: sometimes phase three will be spent in the bag room. At that time you will get the pleasure of making contact with a heavy bag ranging between 70 pounds and 150 pounds. The heavy bag provides resistance for an excellent muscle building workout.
Tired yet? More than likely you will be totally exhausted at this point in the workout. Our one-hour classes burn between 700-900 calories! However, we aren't quite done. After phase three, you will spend the last few rounds working on push-ups and/or sit-ups. Once you have completed phase four, it is time to cool down and stretch before we send you home feeling great about yourself!
At A.K.C., we promise that you will receive the most intense workout you have ever experienced, while having fun at the same time. Our Program Director and his instructors will push you, get you in shape, keep you smiling, and have you begging to come back for more. That is the beauty of our workout, it is fun, always changing, and always progressing!

  MMA, Richmond VA

If you are in tune with the fight world, you know the importance of cross- training. It is rare that a fighter relies on the skills from only one discipline. This can be seen in Ultimate Fighting Competitions and Vale Tudo tournaments.
Statistics show that 90% of all fights end on the ground. Striking will not protect you if you are lying on your back. This is where knowledge of submissions becomes a necessity.
Submission fighting is a hybrid of the martial arts. Here at AKC, the elements of Muay Thai Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Submission Wrestling are combined to provide you with the best arsenal known to man.
By participating in our Team Submission curriculum, or "grappling program", you will learn a vast array of arm-bars, knee-bars, leg-locks, ankle locks and chokes. These Submissions will allow you to subdue your opponent from any position. As part of the program, takedowns and throws from a variety of styles are also incorporated.
If you have a thirst for competition, let us quench it for you. Since 1993, our students have won over 75% of the free-fighting competitions they entered. In addition to the Vale Tudo we sponsor, fighters representing Team Submission compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Russian Sombo, Shootfighting and Free-fighting events across the globe. We say, "only a fighter knows the feeling" and if you have that feeling, that motivation to test your skills, contact us about training and participation in upcoming events.

  Judo
Kodokan Judo is an art, a sport, and a means of self-defense. Like jujitsu, its forerunner, Judo is a method of turning an opponent's strength against him. Thus defeating him in a most efficient manner.
In 1882, Jujitsu practitioner Jigoro Kano formulated a new system of barehanded fighting, which he named "Judo". Shortly after his creation of the "gentle art", Kano opened the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo.
The purpose of the Judo discipling according to Jigoro Kano (the founder):
"Judo is the way to the most effective use of both physical and spiritual strength. By training you in attacks and defense it refines your body and your soul and helps you make the spiritual essence of Judo a part of your very being. In this way you are able to perfect yourself and contribute something of value to the world. This is the final goal of the Judo discipline."

Adult Martials Arts, Richmond VA

Whether you are looking to gain confidence and self-defense, or flexibility and muscle toning, our adult karate program is for you! It doesn't matter if you are continuing your training from years ago, or starting brand new. Our Richmond based  classes are friendly, instructional and motivational. The only thing missing from our program is you.
Our Program Director has designed a curriculum package that will guide you step by step through the Americanized karate style, Muay Thai, Kickboxing and more. The karate classes, listed as Adult Open Workout on the schedule, meet three times a week for approximately fifty minutes. In a little less than an hour, you will warm-up, stretch out, and work your curriculum. Your instructor will motivate you to punch sharper, kick higher, and be the best you can be.
It has been said that we are a family, "a family of misfits". Meaning, we welcome everyone to attend our karate program. You do not have to kick or look like Bruce Lee to workout in our school. While discipline, attention to technique, and hard work are encouraged, our instructors will take the time to get to know you not just as a student, but as a member of our family. It is our job to make your goals become your accomplishments.
